Understanding CHIPS Petitions

CHIPS means "child in need of protective services." CHIPS actions are filed by Wisconsin Child Protective Services (CPS) if there are allegations of abuse or other harmful conduct by a parent,grandparent, or other guardian against a child. The state may deem a child in need of protection when there are charges of:

• Abandonment
• Child neglect
• Child abuse
• Alcohol or drug addiction

CHIPS actions may also be filed when the parent is unable to care for the child, such as when a parent is incarcerated or hospitalized.
